This article is an excerpt from the book called “Design Ideas For Kitchens” by “Susan Hillstom”. This article talks about cooling system in the modern refrigerators. Knowledge about how the refrigerator works will help our readers with their DIY Projects.

Refrigerators and freezers have come a long way.  Current models have sleek good looks and smart features we could barely have imagined a decade ago.  And all of them consume less energy.  The most important advance, however, is the ability to customize these appliances and their features to suit your cooking, cooling, and entertaining needs.

As always, you have a choice between a separate refrigerator and freezer and the more common combination of the two within one model.  Combination models include refrigerator-and-freezer side-by-side, freezer-on-top, or freezer-on-bottom configurations.  Side-by-sides keeps both fresh and frozen foods easily accessible, but only the largest sizes can efficiently store the bulkiest items.  With bottom-mounts, fresh foods are at eye level, but freezer access requires bending; top-mounts do the reverse, so your choice may depend on which section you need to access most.  Nowadays you can rethink this large, central cooling appliance in favor of modular or smaller under-counter refrigerators or freezers placed at various zones in the kitchen according to need.

There’s big news inside the new cooling equipment, too.  Storage is more flexible and customizable.  There is room in some models for platters of party food, two-liter soda or wine bottles, bulky frozen foods, and other items you used to have to jam in to get hidden in the back.  Some models have two thermostats or dual compressors so that humidity levels in fresh-food and freezer compartments can be controlled separately; that way, lettuce won’t wilt in order to keep ice cream frozen, for example.  Another plus-there is no transfer of odors from one compartment to another.   Inside the fresh-foods compartment, there may be several temperature zones so that you can store fruits and vegetables differently from meats, dairy products, or beverages.  Express features on some refrigerators chill certain foods superfast or cut thawing time in half.  Cooling equipment is now designer equipment too, especially at the high end.  Some stainless-steel units have the commercial look that many people love; retro, 1950s-style units with up-to-date interiors come in bright colors that really stand out.  If you’re not going to call attention to your chic refrigerator you can follow another significant trend by integrating it with the look of your kitchen.  Select a built-in or 24-inch-deep unit that fits flush with the cabinets or hides behind cabinet doors.
