Common KitchenAid Appliance Problems

KitchenAid Dishwasher Clean Light Blinking

When the Clean light blinks on a KitchenAid dishwasher, the machine is communicating an error code. Count the number of blinks before the pause, then count the blinks after the pause. This gives you a two-digit code.

The most common codes: 6-1 means water is not entering the tub (check water supply valve, inlet valve, float switch). 7-1 or 7-2 means heating element fault (element burned out or control board not signaling element). 8-1 means drain pump fault (clogged pump, failed motor, or blocked drain path). 3-1 means thermistor or OWI sensor fault (sensor dirty or failed).

To reset: Press Hi-Temp Wash, then Heated Dry, four times in a row (Hi-Temp, Heated Dry, Hi-Temp, Heated Dry, Hi-Temp, Heated Dry, Hi-Temp, Heated Dry), then press Hi-Temp one more time. All lights should illuminate briefly, then go out. This resets the control board.

KitchenAid Oven F3 E2 Error

F3 E2 on a KitchenAid oven indicates a temperature sensor circuit problem. The oven detected the sensor reading as shorted (low resistance).

First, try resetting: Turn off the circuit breaker for one minute, then restore power. If F3 E2 returns, the oven temperature sensor (RTD probe) needs testing. The sensor should read approximately 1080 ohms at room temperature (70°F). If resistance is significantly lower, the sensor is shorted and needs replacement.

The temperature sensor is a rod-shaped probe inside the oven cavity, usually mounted on the back wall. Part numbers vary by model but are cross-compatible with Whirlpool ovens using the same platform.

KitchenAid Refrigerator Shows PO

PO means Power Outage. This is not an error code. It is simply telling you that power was interrupted. Press any button on the control panel to acknowledge and clear the PO display.

If temperatures are too warm after a power outage, the refrigerator needs time to cool back down. Keep doors closed as much as possible. Freezer should return to 0°F within 4-6 hours. Refrigerator should reach 37°F within 6-8 hours. Food safety: discard any meat, dairy, or prepared foods if the freezer was above 40°F for more than 2 hours.

If PO keeps appearing without actual power outages, there may be a problem with the electrical connection, circuit breaker, or the main control board detecting voltage fluctuations.

KitchenAid Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes

If dishes come out dirty, the problem is almost always water delivery, water temperature, or blocked spray arms. KitchenAid dishwashers require water temperature of at least 120°F entering the machine.

Check the filter assembly first. Remove the lower rack. The filter is in the bottom of the tub. Twist to unlock and lift out. Rinse under running water. Debris trapped here blocks water circulation.

Inspect the spray arms. Remove them and hold up to light. All holes should be clear. Use a toothpick to clear mineral deposits or food debris. The spray arms must spin freely when reinstalled.

Run hot water at the kitchen sink before starting the dishwasher. This ensures hot water reaches the machine immediately rather than waiting for the water heater to deliver it through cold pipes.

KitchenAid Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working

KitchenAid ice makers require freezer temperature between 0°F and 5°F. Check the freezer thermometer first. Above 10°F, ice production stops.

If freezer is cold enough, check the ice maker on/off switch. Some models have a wire arm that lifts to turn off ice production when the bin is full. If the arm is raised, ice production is disabled. Lower the arm to resume ice making.

Ice maker diagnostic codes (visible in service mode): E1 means no cooling (freezer not cold enough). E2 means motor lost position. E3 means heater timeout (harvest heater issue). E4 means dry cycle detected (no water fill).

If ice maker receives no water, check the water inlet valve (usually at the bottom rear of refrigerator), the water filter (clogged filters reduce flow), and water supply line for kinks.

KitchenAid Oven Not Heating

If your KitchenAid oven does not heat at all, check the basics first. Is the clock set? Some models will not operate if the clock shows a flashing display. Is the control lock engaged? Look for a “Lock” indicator on the display.

For electric ovens, the bake element is at the bottom and the broil element is at the top. If bake works but broil does not (or vice versa), you know which element has failed. A burned-out element often shows a visible break or blister in the coil.

For gas ovens, if the igniter glows orange for more than 90 seconds without the gas igniting, the igniter is too weak. It must reach a specific temperature (draw enough current) to open the gas safety valve. Weak igniters glow but never get hot enough. This is the most common gas oven repair.

KitchenAid Stand Mixer Grinding Noise

A grinding noise from a KitchenAid stand mixer typically indicates worn gears. The mixer uses a worm gear and several larger gears to transfer motor power to the attachment hub.

Open the motor housing (requires removing several screws) and inspect the gears visually. Worn nylon gears will show missing teeth or metal shavings from the worm gear. The worm gear is steel; the driven gears are softer nylon designed to fail before the motor does.

Gear replacement is labor-intensive but cost-effective compared to buying a new mixer. A quality repair restores the mixer to like-new operation for years of additional service.

KitchenAid Appliances We Repair

KitchenAid Refrigerators

KitchenAid refrigerators display PO (Power Outage) after electrical interruptions. Press any button to clear it and restore normal operation. If temperatures show as numbers like 01, 02, or 03, those are error codes indicating sensor problems. Error 01 means temperature sensor fault. Error 02 means defrost sensor fault. Error 03 means defrost heater fault.

  • Built-in models (KBFN, KBFO, KBSD): Panel-ready units designed for custom kitchen installations in 42-inch and 48-inch widths. These require careful service due to cabinet integration.
  • Counter-depth models (KRFC, KRFF, KRMF): Sit flush with standard 24-inch deep cabinets. Share platforms with Whirlpool but feature upgraded LED lighting and metal-on-metal handles.

We provide KitchenAid refrigerator repair for all configurations. Common problems: not cooling, ice maker not working, water dispenser leaking, PO error after power outage, frost buildup in freezer.

KitchenAid Dishwashers

KitchenAid dishwashers communicate errors through Clean light blink patterns. Count the blinks, note the pause, count again. For example: 6 blinks, pause, 1 blink means error code 6-1 (no water entering tub). 3 blinks, pause, 1 blink means code 3-1 (thermistor or OWI sensor fault). 8 blinks, pause, 1 blink means code 8-1 (drain pump problem).

Models with digital displays show F-codes directly: F6 E1 (water supply), F8 E1 (slow drain), F9 E1 (diverter disc fault).

Model prefixes: KDTM (third-rack models with additional wash system complexity), KDTE, KDFE, KUDS. FreeFlex racks and adjustable tines are common mechanical failure points after years of use.

The most common KitchenAid dishwasher problem is dishes not getting clean, usually caused by clogged spray arms or dirty filters. We provide KitchenAid dishwasher repair for all models. Common problems: Clean light blinking, not cleaning dishes, not draining, door latch issues, water not heating.

KitchenAid Ovens and Ranges

KitchenAid ovens display F-codes when problems occur. F2 E0 means keypad connection problem. F3 E0 through F3 E9 indicate temperature sensor issues. F5 codes relate to door latch problems. Many F-codes can be cleared by turning off the circuit breaker for one minute.

The oven temperature sensor (RTD) should measure approximately 1080 ohms at 70°F. If your oven runs too hot or too cold, the sensor may be out of calibration or failing.

Wall ovens (KODE, KOCE, KOSE): Feature Even-Heat True Convection. Single and double configurations available. Share control boards with Whirlpool wall ovens for excellent parts availability.

Ranges: Freestanding (KFGG, KFEG), slide-in (KSGG, KSEG), and commercial-style (KFGC, KDRS). Commercial-style models have heavy-duty grates and higher BTU burners requiring specialized service knowledge.

We provide KitchenAid oven repair for gas, electric, and dual-fuel models. Common problems: oven not heating, F-code errors, uneven cooking, self-clean door stuck locked, burners not igniting.

KitchenAid Cooktops

KitchenAid gas cooktops with electronic ignition will click but not light if the igniter is wet or dirty. Wipe the igniter ceramic with a dry cloth. If clicking continues without flame, the igniter may need replacement.

Induction cooktops display error codes when cookware is incompatible or too small for the cooking zone. The cookware must be magnetic (cast iron or magnetic stainless steel) and cover at least 70% of the cooking zone.

Common problems: burner not igniting, clicking without flame, induction not detecting cookware, uneven flame, control panel not responding.

KitchenAid Stand Mixers

KitchenAid stand mixers are built to last decades, but the gears and motor can eventually wear out. Signs of gear failure include grinding noise, burning smell, or the attachment hub not turning while the motor runs.

Models we service: Classic (K45SS) through Professional 600 (KP26M1X) and commercial NSF-certified models. Both tilt-head and bowl-lift configurations are repairable.

The most common repairs are gear replacement and speed control repairs. We use genuine KitchenAid parts for all mixer repairs. Your mixer should be professionally serviced if it has not been used in years and the grease has hardened.

Common problems: grinding noise, motor runs but attachments don’t turn, speed control problems, leaking oil, attachment hub wobble.

Why KitchenAid Appliances Need Professional Repair

Whirlpool Parts Compatibility

KitchenAid is Whirlpool Corporation’s premium brand, positioned above standard Whirlpool products and below the luxury JennAir line. All three brands share manufacturing platforms and parts. A control board that fits a KitchenAid dishwasher often fits the equivalent Whirlpool and JennAir models. This parts commonality means excellent availability and competitive pricing for repairs.

Premium Features Require Knowledge

KitchenAid dishwashers have ProWash, ProScrub, and ProDry systems that adjust cycles based on soil level. The refrigerators have ExtendFresh and Produce Preserver technologies. Wall ovens feature Even-Heat True Convection with a bow-tie shaped heating element. These premium features require technicians who understand the technology to diagnose problems accurately.

Built-In Appliance Complexity

Many KitchenAid refrigerators and dishwashers are built-in or panel-ready models installed flush with cabinetry. Accessing these units for repair requires care to avoid damaging custom panels and trim. We have experience with integrated installations common in Las Colinas and Valley Ranch custom homes.

Stand Mixer Expertise

KitchenAid stand mixers are unique in the appliance world—designed to be repaired rather than replaced. The internal gears and motor can be serviced, and a properly repaired mixer will last another decade or more. Few appliance repair companies offer this service. We do.

KitchenAid Appliance Repair FAQ

The Clean light blinks to communicate error codes. Count the blinks before the pause, then count the blinks after the pause. For example, 6 blinks-pause-1 blink means code 6-1 (water not entering tub). Common codes: 3-1 (thermistor/OWI fault), 6-1 (water inlet), 7-1 (heater fault), 8-1 (drain pump fault). Reset by pressing Hi-Temp Wash then Heated Dry four times in a row, then Hi-Temp once more.

F3 E2 indicates the oven temperature sensor circuit is shorted. The sensor should read approximately 1080 ohms at 70°F. First try resetting power for one minute. If the error returns, the temperature sensor (RTD probe) likely needs replacement. The sensor is a rod inside the oven cavity, usually on the back wall.

PO means Power Outage. It is not an error code. The refrigerator is simply notifying you that power was interrupted. Press any button on the control panel to clear the display and resume normal operation. If PO appears repeatedly without actual power outages, there may be an issue with the electrical connection or control board.

Many parts are interchangeable. KitchenAid is Whirlpool Corporation’s premium brand, and both share manufacturing platforms. A control board, heating element, or pump that fits a KitchenAid model often fits the equivalent Whirlpool and sometimes JennAir models. This parts commonality means excellent availability and competitive repair costs.

Yes. We repair all KitchenAid stand mixer models including tilt-head and bowl-lift configurations. Common repairs include gear replacement (for grinding noise), speed control repair, motor service, and attachment hub repair. KitchenAid mixers are designed to be repaired and can last decades with proper maintenance.

For most models: Press Hi-Temp Wash, then Heated Dry. Repeat this sequence four times (8 button presses total). Then press Hi-Temp Wash once more. All indicator lights should illuminate briefly, then turn off. This resets the control board. Alternatively, turn off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes and restore power.

KitchenAid refrigerators typically last 14 to 20 years. Dishwashers last 10 to 13 years. Wall ovens and ranges last 15 to 20 years. Stand mixers can last 25 to 40 years with proper maintenance and occasional gear replacement. KitchenAid appliances are built to premium standards and generally outlast budget brands.
